The
number of individuals electing to have plastic and reconstructive
procedures has risen dramatically in
recent years. Dr. Gray attributes the increase to technological
advances which have greatly improved the number of enhancement and/or
quality of life procedures for consumers to
consider, and because of the fact that many of these advances can be
performed with little or no down time.
Plastic Surgery encompasses both Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery but there's a distinction;
Cosmetic Surgery
is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to
enhance the patient's appearance and self-esteem. *Cosmetic surgery is
typically not covered by insurance because the majority of these
procedures are elective.
Reconstructive Surgery is
performed on abnormal structures of the body caused by; trauma, cancer,
tumors, disease, infection, developmental abnormalities and/or congenital
defects,. These surgical procedures are typically performed to improve functions, but may also
be performed in order achieve a near normal appearance for the patient. *Reconstructive surgery is generally covered by most health insurance
policies, although coverage for specific procedures and levels of
coverage may vary greatly.
